King Tut’s Moves: Dance Like and Egyptian
If you want to look cool and impress others whilst dancing, check out some old moves that haven't gone out of style. Well then you should take inspiration from ancient Egypt and pick up tutting, aptly named after Egypt's most famous pharaoh, King Tut. The moves themselves are a form of another popular dance expression, ‘popping’, which is commonly seen in clubs and the videos of MTV.
Tutting combines gestures of right angle movements that for geometric shapes. An easy to learn dance, anyone can tut as long as they can follow the basic rhythm of music and bend their joints. If you're keen to learn how to tut, there are plenty of YouTube instructional videos that will take you through the steps. Tutting has kept its roots in popping but of course has evolved with time and now the moves are much more dramatic, from tiny detailed finger sweeps to poses that involved the entire body.
One of tutting’s most famous moments probably came when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, took on King Tut’s famous poses. In Jackson's video for his hit 'Remember the Time' he popularised tutting even more, with a huge crowd of mummies partaking in the dance. However the craze originally started following the opening of the King Tut exhibition at the British Museum in 1972, when popular comedian Steve Martin performed a sketch to the tune ‘King Tut’ in celebration of Tut’s popularity on Saturday Night Live. You may have never thought about it, but the well-known vogueing trend Madonna started in her 'Vogue' video is actually a form of tutting as well.
So make like a pop star, put on your dancing shoes and getting tutting. It takes very little time to master so you’ll be impressing your friends with your brilliant King Tut inspired moves in no time flat.
